Today is national Piña Colada Day, so there’s no better reason to treat yourself to a creamy island cocktail this evening!
The Piña Colada has been the national drink of Puerto Rico since 1978, but its history goes back far longer. The earliest known story states that in the 19th century, Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresí, to boost his crew’s morale, gave them a beverage that contained coconut, pineapple and white rum. This was what would be later known as the famous Piña Colada. Thanks Wikipedia!
Piña Colada (makes one)
- 30ml Havana Club Rum
- 30ml Malibu Coconut Rum
- 2 tsp Coconut Cream
- 60ml Pineapple Juice
- Cup of Ice
Add all ingredients to a blender and blitz until smooth. Serve over more ice in a hurricane glass. Garnish with pineapple and cherries if you have them, if not, straws, umbrellas, and anything else you can find!
This is a great drink for a hot and sunny afternoon, but is quite a rich and creamy drink that you probably don’t want to drink all night! Feel free to experiment with the balance of rums, can be make stronger if so desired…
Of course, these drinks are best enjoyed while listening to Escape (The Piña Colada Song).
However you celebrate this special day, remember to enjoy (responsibly) x
